Women and Girls

IN uses sport as a tool to raise awareness amongst girls and young women on their rights as women, empowering them to make meaningful choices about the issues that affect their lives. IN also believes in the power of using sport to educate boys and young men on women’s rights so that cycles of gender-based violence and discrimination are broken down.

STOP - Gender base violence, Zambia

Gender-based violence and discrimination are ongoing issues faced by many women in the developing world. Such oppression restricts and often destroys the lives of women and girls of all ages and backgrounds and contributes to an out-dated way of life that without action could stretch far into the future. From understanding health issues to learning basic financial skills IN believes that sport can be an important tool in changing attitudes and helping young women improve their futures. Working with partners across Zambia, IN integrates rights awareness

Go Sisters, Zambia

Gender-based violence and discrimination are ongoing issues faced by many women in the developing world. Such oppression restricts and often destroys the lives of women and girls of all ages and backgrounds and contributes to an out-dated way of life that without action could stretch far into the future. The Go Sisters programme focuses on advocacy and empowerment through training in leadership, life skills and promotion of women’s sport as a vehicle for development. Women and girls form action teams and community committees to enable female peer leaders to take on positions with decision making responsibilities with the support from their parents and communities. Boys are included in the programme as a strategic choice, because without their involvement and understanding gender inequalities will not change.

Pathways, Kenya

Using a holistic football programme, girls at risk will receive leadership training; access education and be supported into financial dependence. Community sensitisation in safeguarding and gender rights will help transform the social landscape to better support and protect the target population from harmful practices. Work with boys and men is crucial in challenging negative beliefs and attitudes towards females and to promote more equitable relationships in communities.
